South West Cyclo-X League Round One

The opening round of the South West Cyclo-X Leagues new season was the main event at the North Cornwall Cycling Festival. This years event included a SW Club/Team Relay Champs. Each team was required to include one under 16 rider and one lady. Only two clubs managed to field a team with Mid Devon CC lining up against cyclo-cross.com. Georgia Delve started for Mid Devon CC and opended a good lead over Reece Gullick before handing over to Sophie Freeth. Karren Wyle-Smith cut down Mid-Devon CC's advantage and Robin Delve started his lap ahead of the very fast Luke Allen. Shortly after being caught by Allen, Delve crashed and landed heavily. Somehow he managed to finish the lap despite having dislocated his shoulder! John Peters was the last rider for Mid Devon CC who set off behind Roy Wyle-Smith.

George Richardson (Kona UK) won this race last year and he returned to defend his title today. At the starting whistle young Luke Allen (cyclo-cross.com) took an early lead but within a quarter of a lap George Richardson had settled behind Luke and remained there for two laps. Allen rode with strength and passion but the more experienced rider, Richardson showed the youngster how to dominate a race. Richardson soon took over the lead and worked on putting distance between himself and the pack. Having secured a one and a half minute advantage, Richardson settled into a rhythm and rode home to a comfortable win with Luke Allen coming in second..

The battle for third and fourth place was amongst local riders and the competition was fierce. John Peters (Mid Devon CC) chased after the leading two riders with Guy Wilkins (Bikinmotion) hot on his heels with Roy Wyle Smith (cyclo-cross.com) some distance behind them. Guy Wilkins overtook John on the third lap and rode a very good race with plenty of attack. Wyle Smith kept Wilkins in his sights and slowly rode him down and finally overtook Wilkins in the last lap. Not to be outdone Wilkins stayed on Wyle Smiths wheel and in the home straight both riders raced for the line but a puncture in the last few feet possibly robbed Wilkins of taking Wyle Smiths scalp.

In the Ladies race, newcomer Maddie Horton (Unattched) rode an impressively consistent race and could be a star in the making.

The Veterans race saw a strong ride by Adrian Clode (Sid Valley CC) taking home the spoils.

Earlier in the day in the under16's race Georgia Delve (Mid Devon CC) rode a supreme race leaving the field in her wake. Georgia enjoyed the variety the course had to offer and at the end was some half a lap ahead of second place Reece Gullick (Unattached).
