The South West Regional Road Race Work Group has decided to promote and improve the quality of the younger riders in our region in the disciple of road racing and to do so with the blessing of British Cycling’s Regional Manager, your club and your coach.
The long term objective is to be able to regularly field teams to represent the South West in the National Points Series Competition and from time to time in selected UCI races in France, Belgium, Holland etc. Those who are selected will have some but not all of their expenses met. Typically the entry fee will be paid plus some of the travel. The balance will have to be met by the rider or, if lucky enough, subsidised by the rider’s club.
The first step on the 2008 ladder will be to provide a means for you to show your metal. This will be over the three successive weekends of the season’s opening road races - the Springtime Pursuits. They will be held on Saturdays 16th and 23rd Feb plus 1st March. In all three races the juniors will start as the first bunch away regardless of past performances and will race for their own prizes. If and when the senior riders catch them the juniors will be expected to work with and stay in the groups to maximise their experience of bunch racing.Once the selectors see who “has what it takes” then invitations will be given to represent the region as a member of a team in a number of selected races.
In order to race on the road you must be at least 16 years of age. If you are not then you will have to wait till you pass that milestone. However the South West Regional Road Race Work Group is hoping to persuade the clubs in the area to put on additional closed circuit races especially for those who are under 16 so that you can start experiencing some exciting racing and thereby be better prepared once you are 16.
