Springtime Pursuit No3 Report

Wed, 5 March 2008

It was a case of Deja-vu for the judges at the finish of the third and final Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles promoted Springtime Pursuit when Jonathan Tiernan-Locke of the promoting club crossed the line, hands aloft, to win the race.

The 40 mile race was run in dry but blustry conditions that tested the ability of the groups to work together to maximise the head start they had on the backmarkers. Some of the early starters had problems in cohesive working often running their group the wrongway around and battling a headwind unnecessarily. Despite an early touch of wheels that took out two of his teammates Jake Eddy, Bristol Cycle Development Squad, rode away from the other juniors to win the first prime.

The second group, under the urging of Keith White, Cycle Sport Dynamo, who was doing his best to get all to contribute, caught the juniors after 12 miles and Eddy some 2 miles later. The second prime went to Matt Stancombe, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles, and was a reward of some hard graft. Another touch of wheels on the third lap saw the third group's efforts disrupted and they were caught by group 4.

Jamie Coward, Exeter Wheelers CC, took the prime at the end of the third lap and used it to launch the winning break as over the next 3 or 4 miles he was joined by most of the riders who ended up in the top 10.

The final prime went to Andrew Parker, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles, as he tried to up the pace and shed some of the break to make it easier for Locke to attack. As the road climbed the last mile to the finish line the Bristol University student duly obliged and one by one those at the front became less and less. Locke's win meant he went home with the Mont's Trophy Shield and his name will be added to a long list of previous winers who have gone on to a long and illustrious cycling careers.

By coming in eighth after a well judged ride, was Will Jansen Bikinmotion CC. This secured him the award for the best junior in the series.
