The Exeter Wheelers CC promoted 50 mile Tom Hawkins Memorial Road Race was run with cold snowy conditions at the Aylesbeare start with the 60 riders in full winter kit. It finished under bright sunny skies.
There were the usual skirmishes in the opening miles as the race climbed up to Daisymount with up to 10 riders establishing a useful lead. They included Jamie Howard from the promoting club, Adam Holmes, Trigon who won this race 3 years ago, and his team mate Jamie Treliving, Matt Ewings of ES Torigni plus Somerset based riders Alec Leslie and Richard Hine and Jules Birks from Kingston Wheelers.
These riders put their heads down, working well together as they battled the headwind along the old A30 towards Clyst Honiton. Riding into the elements was not conducive to serious chasing so by the time the break turned past Exeter Airport with the wind on their backs they were well established.
Some of the weaker riders in the break were dropped on the climb out of Aylesbeare leaving 7 at the front. On the second lap a puncture put paid to any hopes that Holmes had of repeating his success of 2005. He had a wheel change but was only able to rejoin the race as a captive in the bunch.
Jake Durant, Mid-Devon CC/Colin Lewis Cycles saw an opportunity of bridging the gap from bunch to break and with a piece of aggressive riding got to the front - no on else from the bunch made it.
As the race went past the airport for the second time Andrew Parker, Mid-Devon CC/Colin Lewis Cycles, Peter Vincent, North Devon Wheelers, and Rex Facey, Chard Wheelers, took off in pursuit. Parker was doing the bulk of the work and they got the gap down to 45 seconds before dropping back to 3 minutes and then on the last lap closing down again to 30 seconds at the finish line. The bunch sprint was won by Guy Wilkins, Bikinmotion CC with his team mate Roland Hanbury fourteenth.
