17/08/08 CS Dynamo 4UP

Sun, 17 August 2008

It was a case of "What might have been" for many teams in the C.S. Dynamo (Exmouth) promoted 40 kilometre 4 up team Time Trial. Top of the list were the luckless Mid-Devon CC/ Colin Lewis "A" Team of Peter Vincent, Andrew Hitchens, Adam Holmes and Jonathan Tiernan-Locke. They started fast and just before the 1/4 distance had been reached they had established a healthy lead over a strong team from the Somerset Road Club and the Bikinmotion CC who were the 2007 winners.

The Mid-Devon quartet had taken 13 mins 44 secs to reach this check point. the Somerset Road Club riders were 9 seconds slower with the Bikinmtion CC lads, who were down to 3 riders after dropping their coach Chris Halls in the opening miles, a further 4 seconds adrift.

It was on the testing climb to Daiseymount and back down that the trouble came thick and fast for the Mid-Devon team. On the way up the hill Holmes punctured. The three remaining riders pressed on as it was "three to count". On the way down the hill 3 spokes of Locke's rear wheel broke in quick succession and he had to retire.

Hitchens and Vincent pressed on using the final 20 kilometres as a testing training session. Passing the check point for a second time Bikinmotion CC were now fastest in 40 mins 16 secs. The Mid-Devon CC duo were 2 seconds slower with the Somerset Road Club team 33 seconds behind having shed their weakest rider.

In the final miles the Bikinmotion trio marginally increased their lead to win in 56 mins 18 secs. Vincent and Hitchens were timed home in 56 mins 30 secs. The Somerset RC team took 57 mins 22 secs.

Other teams to have problems were the Royal Navy & RMCA who lost their strong man Sean Childs with a puncture inside the first 3 miles. The other 3 riders kept going for a time of 59 mins 55 secs.

A mixed veteran and junior Mid-Devon CC/ Colin Lewis Team of Mike Parker, Tom Dracup, Simon and Jonathan Aske had to stop when the younger Aske touched a wheel and came down. Assured that he was only bruised and shaken the others continued to finish in 1 hour 5 mins 23 secs.

Other MDCC times:-
Matt Stancombe, Mark Pollard, Jake Durant, Adam Beams 59 mins 2 secs
Keith Watts, Adam Fitzpatrick, Alan Drury, Malcolm Silkstone 1 hour 4 mins 33 secs
