A frantic chase by Sean Childs, Royal Navy & RMCA, over the closing miles to catch Phil Borrett, Bikinmotion CC, was just enough to give him a 3 second winning margin in the Mid-Devon CC/Colin Lewis Cycles promoted 25 mile tile trial over the home club's Peter Vincent. Conditions were not as kind as in 2007 and most riders were 1 minute slower this year. A light drizzle swept across the course from time to time blown by a south west to westerly wind that made the closing 12 miles the hard ones.

Childs had made up 1 minute on Borrett after 16 or so miles and with him now in sight he was able to reel him in at a faster rate. With 3 miles left he was less than 15 seconds behind. Borrett proved reslilant and it was only an all out effort that took him past the Sidmouth based rider as they entered the slip road to the finish line.

Karl Hodson had the consolation of winning the Over 40s award. His nearest challenger was Stuart Hall who had the misfortune to puncture with 5 miles to go and finished "on the rim" There was a promising debuts from Matt Stancombe, Mid-Devon CC, whose 57 min 46secs and 15 year old Tom Dracup. Their rides augur well for 2009.

The ladies prize went to Sue Brimecombe, CS Dynamo (Exmouth) with one of the few personal best times recorded.

In the over 50s Ron Peters held off the promoting club's Ian Deakin by one second. It was more clear cut in the Over 60s with Ken Robertson having 33 secs advantage over Mike Lawrence, Clevedon & District. This award was by luck and courtesy of a puncture to Ray Retter, North Devon Wheelers. Retter is having a wretched time of late - a heavy crash when his stem broke disrupted his training and then in the National 12 hour he had 3 punctures and retired. Today was little better when he punctired at the 20 mile point.
